InMotion '09 : Pervasive Technologies for Improved Mobility and Transportation

Held in conjunction with Pervasive 2009
May 11, 2009 - Nara, Japan

Motivation

In recent years we see an increasing deployment of sensors and powerful mobile processing devices in cities. Amongst others, it has allowed for new approaches in the study of the built environment including key infrastructure systems. Recent research efforts harnessed these technologies for analyzing the patterns of different dynamic flows in the city such as environmental conditions, people movements, and events.

While research efforts in Pervasive Computing have focused so far primarily on application areas such as health, ambient assisted living, socializing, and gaming, the newly available information about urban dynamics provides a promising context for Pervasive Computing applications in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

Research in ITS aims to enhance transportation infrastructure systems and services as well as the vehicle itself through information and communication systems. In recent years, ITS research has been focused on riders and pedestrians as well.

This workshop will explore applications for Pervasive Computing in ITS, with a focus on new methods for obtaining real-time data relevant to peoples’ mobility, the provision of such information, and data fusion.
